Linah AlShaalan is one of the writers selected to join the Writer Incubator Program offered by the Saudi Literature, Publishing, and Translation Authority, part of an initiative to support publishing in less common literary genres. Her novel "Akhabeet" has been accepted by the authority as an innovative work in the field of Arabic science fiction. "Akhabeet" is Linah's debut novel, since her academic and professional background stem from healthcare, particularly in occupational therapy.
Linah graduated from King Saud University in Riyadh with a degree in Occupational Therapy, being part of the first cohorts of Saudi graduates in this field in 2015. She then obtained a master's degree in Occupational Therapy in 2018 and continued her graduate studies after receiving a scholarship from the University of Southern California in the USA to pursue a PhD in the same field.
As a researcher, Linah focuses her efforts on exploring the social aspects of autism and neurodiversity, examining how cultural and social differences among individuals influence the effectiveness of medical assessments in diagnosis. Additionally, she conducts research that connects concepts of occupational therapy with Saudi culture to investigate the best methods for rehabilitating and empowering people with disabilities in the Kingdom. Linah currently works as an assistant professor at a major university in Riyadh and as an occupational therapist in a private clinic.
Between teaching undergraduate students and serving individuals with disabilities, Linah finds time to weave imaginative worlds rich in detail and embroidered with local culture, embedding ancient symbols of Saudi culture in futuristic contexts. In her fast-paced narrative style, she challenges readers to see these symbols in unusual contexts, interacting with diverse characters as they navigate the social struggles faced by Saudi society today.
